After a tame transfer window, Liverpool have had a promising start to the new season under new coach Arne Slot.

The transfer rumour mill never rests, though, as teams work behind the scenes almost incessantly to track targets and hold on to their current players.

Now, fresh reports are suggesting that one of Liverpool’s main targets of this summer could get a major bump on his current contract.

Liverpool-linked Anthony Gordon to enter contract talks with Newcastle United

As reported by TBR Football, Newcastle United are ready to open talks with Anthony Gordon over a new contract.

The English forward’s star has continued to rise ever since he left Merseyside in January 2023, moving to Newcastle from Everton in a £45m move.

Ever since moving to Tyneside, Gordon has been regarded as one of England’s most promising young prospects, even more so after winning the U21 Euros with England last year and picking up the runners-up medal with their senior side earlier this summer.

Liverpool had sensationally agreed a deal with Newcastle in principle in the summer for Gordon, though the move never really got off the ground.

Gordon has two more years remaining on his £60k-per-week Newcastle contract. During his time St James’ Park, he has made 69 appearances across all competitions, registering 14 goals and 11 assists.

Gordon could vie for Salah’s spot

Gordon’s Evertonian background will definitely play as a deterrent every time Liverpool try to buy him, though it is interesting to keep in mind that he was at Liverpool’s academy first before he was released and joined Everton at 11 years of age.

That said, Liverpool do have slots opening up out wide. Mo Salah will leave at some point. Diogo Jota‘s availability remains a matter of lottery, and Luis Díaz could be subjected to a big-money move in the near future.

Gordon would make quite the waves if he were to again cross the Merseyside divide, but he would absolutely suit the current coach’s setup.
