Arne Slot admitted that he initially questioned Darwin Nunez’s decision to shoot from the edge of the box but ultimately conceded it was a “good choice” after the striker scored Liverpool’s third goal in stunning fashion against Bournemouth.

The goals kept on coming after Luis Diaz quickly put the hosts ahead in the 26th minute, capitalizing on Kepa Arrizabalaga’s failed attempt to clear Ibrahima Konaté’s long ball and finishing into an empty net.

Less than two minutes later, the Colombian doubled Liverpool’s lead, blasting a shot from a tight angle after receiving a pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, Nunez stole the spotlight with his goal, curling a brilliant strike into the far corner to cap off a standout performance.

The Manager’s Reaction

Given his recent well-documented frustrations and the fact it ended a goal drought for his club that stretched back to April, it was perhaps an understandable reaction. We shall now attend to the insights we have noticed in the Post Match Conference via Youtube.

“My first instinct when he shot was ‘why does he shoot’,” Slot said after the game. “I would have said ‘why don’t you keep on dribbling’ because he made the ball free and I think the defender was on the ground.”

“But then it was a fraction of a second later when I saw the ball went in off the post and then I was I was like ‘okay, maybe you are a better football player than I was in the past’. So it was a good choice from him.”

The 25-year-old striker managed to impress everyone with his wonderful curler. Nunez currently is on £140,000 per week and has three more years left to his contract.
Nunez made his first start under Slot and netted his first goal of the season. While his finish was remarkable, Slot also praised his defensive contributions. “I play a striker to score goals, of course,” Slot said, highlighting his appreciation for Nunez’s all-around performance.

The gaffer concluded his remarks by stating the need to be consistent and making the act of doing so an everyday thing. He remains hopeful that the Uruguayan will continue his hot streak this upcoming week as the Reds kick off their Carabao Cup defence against West Ham United.

We hope Saturday’s goal was a watershed moment for Nunez under the new management. Hopefully he discovers what works for him and goes on to make the starting striker’s spot his own.
