Alexis Mac Allister considers himself “very lucky” to play alongside Liverpool star Ryan Gravenberch who makes things easier for him. Liverpool have played the midfield trio of Mac Allister, Gravenberch and Dominic Szoboszlai consistently during the start of this season.

The Reds failed to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi for the number six role under head coach Arne Slot. As Liverpool faced another transfer embarrassment while chasing a number six, they used the opportunity to make crucial internal changes.

Slot deployed Gravenberch in the number six position during the latter stages of the pre-season tour for Liverpool this summer. The Dutch international played in that position for his childhood club Ajax before joining Bayern Munich after his steep rise.

However, the 22-year-old struggled at Bayern as the staff there failed to find the best position for him to play. Legendary former manager Jurgen Klopp signed Gravenberch for Liverpool in the summer of 2023, always complimentary of the Dutchman’s talent.

However, Gravenberch struggled during his first season with the Reds due to nagging injuries and playing in various midfield positions. Klopp’s style of play was very direct in attacks and counter-attacks which left a lot of space in the backline. Players like Fabinho with more defensive mobility and awareness thrived in the role due to that entertaining style of play.

However, Slot uses a more efficient and patient tactical approach which allows the team to congest the midfield, eliminating spaces. Gravenberch is thriving under the tactics as it allows him to play according to his strength while improving other areas.

Speaking to Sky Sports (via Tribuna), Mac Allister praised Gravenberch for his qualities which makes things easier for the Argentine. He said:

“We try to adapt to how they [the opponent] play as well, but I’m very lucky, I have to say, because Ryan is a fantastic player. When you play with good players, everything is easier. I’m very happy that he is doing well, and I think everyone can see that and see how important Ryan is for our team. It’s nice to play alongside him, we are trying to still adapt and learn from each other, so I really enjoy it.”

Liverpool have a very tough fixture in an already congested season as the Champions League format changed, adding more games. Gravenberch has a key role to play for the Reds as the rotation policy will allow him some rest.
