Aston Villa manager Unai Emery wants Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to bolster his team with his versatility and defensive abilities. Gomez has struggled to find significant game time at Liverpool under new head coach Arne Slot this season so far.
The 27-year-old played a key role under former legendary manager Jurgen Klopp last season, using the versatility to his advantage. Gomez played as a left-back, right-back, centre-back and defensive midfielder according to the team’s requirements due to the injury crisis.
Gomez is the longest-serving Liverpool player, having joined the club from Charlton Athletic in 2015 under former manager Brendan Rodgers. The 27-year-old played a big part in Klopp’s success at Liverpool and throughout his ups and downs as the manager.
The England international earned big praise for his consistent performances last season despite playing in multiple positions throughout the campaign. Gomez played mostly as the left-back due to the long-term injuries to Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas during the season.
According to Football Insider (via Fichajes), Villa wants Gomez from the Reds in the future transfer window. Emery’s team have enjoyed a gradual rise under his leadership, now playing in the Champions League competition this season.
Gomez is earning £85,000 per week at Liverpool through his current contract which expires in the summer of 2027. The 27-year-old is behind Virgil van Dijk, Jarell Quansah and Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order for the centre-back role.
Liverpool’s new sporting director Richard Hughes accepted a £45 million offer for Gomez from Newcastle United during the summer. The deal was parallel with Anthony Gordon’s potential transfer to Liverpool from the Magpies with a separate price tag.

However, the deal fell through as Gomez stayed at the club to participate in his 10th season at Anfield. Liverpool fans adore Gomez for his humble nature and selfless contributions to the team. However, if Liverpool accepts a major offer that benefits both the player and the club then the fans will accept his departure while wishing him luck.
