Liverpool face Wolves away from home in the Premier League
Liverpool are back in action in the Premier League after handing West Ham a 5-1 drubbing in the Carabao Cup. The Reds played particularly impressive as the line-up against the Hammers featured a majority of their fringe players, who passed the test with flying colours especially given that there were some apprehensions regarding the squad’s depth.
Arne Slot’s next test in the English top flight comes at the Molineux on September 28th at 17:30 local time, where his men take on a Wolverhampton Wanderers side that has lost each of their last three matches in all competitions, conceding eight goals in the process. Liverpool, meanwhile, have lost just once all season and in their last three outings, they have found the back of the net 11 times.
The match promises to be an enticing affair nonetheless, but one that Liverpool should be considerable favourites to win.
Team News
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolverhampton Wanderers are 20th in the Premier League and are yet to win a single game this season. They have conceded 14 goals, scoring just five goals in as many league outings. They will be expected to take a very conservative approach against Liverpool but will need to do so with as many as six absentees.
Gary O’Neil will need to do without the likes of Bastien Meupiyou, Boubacar Traore, Enso Gonzalez, Sasa Kalajdic, Toti Gomes and Yerson Mosquera. None of Wolves’ absentees are expected to recover from their injuries in time for the visit of Liverpool. There are, however, no suspensions in Wolves’ camp coming into the match.
Matheus Cunha, meanwhile, is available and will be the home side’s go-to man offensively. He has scored twice this season in the Premier League and will be a threat to Liverpool but that’s not to say that Mario Lemina and Jorgen Strand Larsen will not have chances to be impactful against the Reds.
PREDICTED WOLVES XI (4-2-3-1): Sa; Lima, Bueno, Pond, Doherty; Gomes, Doyle; Sarabia, Lemina, Cunha; Guedes.
Liverpool
Liverpool have won three successive matches in all competitions, firmly putting the Nottingham Forest defeat behind them in the process. The Reds also have no major injury issues to deal with although Alisson Becker’s availability for the fixture has been described as being “tight” by Arne Slot while Harvey Elliott is also on the sideline due to a foot injury.
The Reds are likely to shuffle their entire backline from the West Ham win. None of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate or Andy Robertson started against the Hammers and consequent to that, they will come into the fixture feeling extremely fresh to provide Liverpool with the upper hand against Wolves at the back.
The offensive department is in fabulous form. Apart from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota are also unassailable in front of goal having scored braces in the Carabao Cup game midweek. Gakpo, however, could return to the bench as Diaz is in even better form than him in the Premier League.
PREDICTED LIVERPOOL XI (4-2-3-1): Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Konate, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Jota
Match-deciding duel
Matt Doherty vs Mohamed Salah
Mohamed Salah is exponentially better than Matt Doherty as a player and can easily give the former Tottenham Hotspur full back a real run for his money at the Molineux on Saturday against a Wolves side that is lacking any quality and chemistry.
Nonetheless, how the Egyptian squares up against the experienced Irishman will determine how impactful he is in the game and whether or not he is able to find the back of the net after two straight games without a goal in the Premier League.
Prediction
Wolves 0-4 Liverpool
Liverpool are enjoying a great run of form in front of goal with practically all of their attackers contributing. The same cannot be said about Wolves, whose defence is also faltering and has jointly conceded the most amount of goals this season.
