Wolves enter the weekend winless and sitting at the bottom of the Premier League. Their preparations for Saturday’s clash against Liverpool have been disrupted by a squad illness, as confirmed by manager Gary O’Neil via the Daily Mail.
Gary O’Neil’s side currently sit at the bottom of the table on goal difference and are one of five teams yet to secure a win this season. However, aside from a heavy 6-2 defeat to Chelsea, their performances have been far from poor. Wolves were unfortunate not to pick up points in their recent outings against Newcastle and Aston Villa.
Liverpool To Face Academy Players
It remains unclear exactly who will be unavailable for the match, as some players who missed training today could still be fit by kick-off tomorrow. However, defender Toti Gomes has already missed Wolves’ last three games due to injury. Dan Bentley was absent from the midweek Carabao Cup tie against Brighton due to illness, which led O’Neil to reveal more details about the squad’s current situation.
“We’ve been dealing with a virus this week, and doctor Kai has been working hard to help the players recover. Several missed training today, and we’ll assess the situation tomorrow. I expect some of the lads will struggle to be fit for the match.”
The manager added: “But that’s not definite; sometimes these things clear up within 24 hours. Bents needed a couple of days before he felt better. We’re hopeful all the players will be fine and fully available, but at this stage, it’s tough to give a clear answer.”
Yerson Mosquera is out for the rest of the season after tearing his MCL and ACL. As a result, 20-year-old academy prospect Alfie Pond is likely to step into the starting XI against Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz. If the illness in the squad continues, several academy players, including Pond, could get the opportunity to make an impact on the big stage.
