Eden Hazard silenced the petulant Chelsea fanbase by accepting that Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah is a better player than him. The Egypt captain has continued his prolific tenure with Liverpool despite doubts about his ability after last season’s late struggles.
Chelsea fans have continuously pushed the debate between Hazard and Salah as the best wingers in the Premier League era. Hazard enjoyed the prime of his career at Chelsea before joining Real Madrid where he failed to maintain his performance.
The 33-year-old retired after his failed stint at Madrid but remains a fan-favourite for the Chelsea fanbase. The comparison between Salah and Hazard has invoked a lot of heated debate between the fans of the two clubs.
Liverpool fans dislike the lack of respect that the Egyptian legend gets despite his endless achievements in English football. Many football fans and pundits downplayed Salah’s first-season success at Liverpool, labelling him a “one-season wonder.”
However, Salah has continued his prolific first-season form as he plays his eighth season with Liverpool, barely missing many games. The 32-year-old has scored 216 goals and provided 93 assists from 357 games for Liverpool so far.
Meanwhile, Hazard ended his stay at Chelsea after playing 352 games while contributing 110 goals and 85 assists for them. Apart from the obvious superiority of Salah in contributions up front, the Egyptian is as influential as Hazard overall.
SPORTbible asked Hazard who the better player between him and Salah has been. He replied:
“Mo Salah, by far. He was good already, you know, but that good? We played when he was playing in Basel. So we [Chelsea] played Champions League the year before and then we were like, ‘Wow’. And then we bought him like, ‘Yeah, we have to. We have to buy this guy because this guy is so good’. And then, you know, in football you have ups and downs and then what he did with Liverpool is like, ‘Wow’.”
Hazard’s honest and emphatic response should silence any self-respecting Chelsea fans from prolonging the debate any further. While Hazard has a good legacy in the Premier League as he dazzled the audience with his skills, he underachieved.
The Belgian winger failed to make any impact at the international level despite playing alongside incredible talents. Furthermore, he failed to win the Champions League with Chelsea, only winning one with Real without having any influence.
