Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister praised the form of his teammate Luis Diaz and demanded consistent contribution from the Colombian. Diaz has enjoyed a prolific start this season under head coach Arne Slot, playing ahead of in-form winger Cody Gakpo.
Liverpool have a strong attacking department with two players in each position and every attacker also has immense versatility. However, the surprise 0-1 loss against Nottingham Forest at Anfield shows that the Reds cannot afford to take any opponent lightly.
The ability to contribute consistently separates an attack department of a top club from the attackers of other competing clubs. Diaz needs to maintain a high level of consistency to fulfil his immense potential which he displayed at FC Porto.
The 27-year-old has scored five goals and provided an assist from seven games in all competitions so far this season. The Colombia international’s main positional rival Gakpo has also maintained a high level of consistency in contribution whenever he played.
The healthy competition is good for Liverpool as they face tough opponents back-to-back in the congested fixture period this season. The current season has more games due to the change in the Champions League format, making rotation policy very important.
Speaking in Tuesday’s press conference (via Liverpoolfc.com) for the Champions League game against Bologna, Mac Allister highlighted the importance of Diaz’s consistency. He said:
“He knows how important the numbers are for strikers or wingers and I am very happy he is getting the goals and assists. He has been amazing for us and I think he can still improve and play the way he plays. I think consistency is key and hopefully he can show during the year what a fantastic player he is.”
Many speculations about Diaz’s future dominated the rumour mill during the summer with Barcelona keen on him. However, Slot gracefully accepted the squad that his successor and legendary manager Jurgen Klopp left at the club last season.
Diaz struggled with contributing consistently compared to his predecessor Sadio Mane which invited a lot of criticism in the past. However, Liverpool fans have always adored the Colombian who earns £55,000 per week, for his humble nature, dazzling abilities and hard-working mindset.
