Although it may be premature to label Liverpool as contenders, there has been considerable speculation about their potential to secure a future title.

The contract saga of the trio of Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a major talking point since the beginning of the season. With all of the three players in the final few months of their contracts, everyone has their eyes on pens and papers.

Mark Lawrenson bids on Virgil Van Dijk to stay

Virgil van Dijk will be hard to replace for Liverpool.

It has been no secret that Liverpool have been on scouting duties since the arrival of Arne Slot. With him settling in nicely, they will look forward to implementing his plans.

While this could be a good thing for the bigger picture, some players are bound to take a hit. Everyone around has been questioning if one of the seasoned players would be on the list. Amid the talks of who’d stay and who’d depart, former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson had expressed his views. Talking to Sports Casting the League championship winner said:

“I think the most important player of the three that Liverpool need to sign on is Virgil van Dijk”

“He really runs that team and would be a massive miss.”

Lawrenson also talked about having depth at the back considering injuries. Talking further he said:

“We’ve seen Liverpool struggle to cover that centre-back place when one of them gets injured in the past. So it’ll benefit them in the long term if he stays at the club longer.”

The former Liverpool man has got facts to back up his bidding. While it may sound less fancy to keep a central defender among the three, the benefit of it to the system is unmatched.

Van Dijk has been known to be a following figure and he possesses a quality to lead. If it ever comes to choosing one among three, for a new era under the head coach Arne Slot, keeping the Dutchman would seem more ethical.

Van Dijk who is currently on a £220,000 per week contract has been linked to a few clubs in the past. The Ballon d’Or 2019 runner-up has been and seen it all under Jurgen Klopp.

It’ll be not long until we get clarity on the Dutchman’s future at Merseyside. But it won’t take long for one to figure that Anfield needs him now more than ever.
