Liverpool managed to get all the points on their first night back in the Champions League at Anfield. Following the 2-0 victory over Bologna thanks to Salah’s assist and a goal, the Reds won’t take things for granted just yet.
While it was a day with the job done, at this level no amount of improvement can be enough. Even though Arne Slot and his men managed to grab all the points, some irregular moments could be talked about in the aftermath of the game.
Arne Slot not carried away
Liverpool started the game in high fashion. But Bologna managed to ring their bells after nearly scoring in the first quarter before the offside flag went up. It was an end-to-end game at times which could raise concern for the Dutch head coach. Giving his take on what he would make of the performance, Arne Slot talking to TNT Sports said:
“Not many things to be delighted with. Apart from both goals, especially the second one. Great ball from Virgil [Van Dijk], a great attack, a great run from Trent Alexander-Arnold. It is always difficult to play a team that takes that much risk.”
As he described the goal that ensured victory to be delight-worthy, he knows about the missing pieces in the puzzle. Slot who has appeared to be humble despite the great start also enlightened Bologna’s approach. Talking to media he added:
“It wasn’t an easy one, in my opinion Bologna made it difficult – similar to Atalanta, man-mark all over the pitch. Wait for the right moment if you play through completely open – it was many times. The last pass could have been better.”
One of the main concerns the Dutchman has is consistency in the final third. Liverpool, who had 51% possession, managed nine shots, four of which were on target. While Bologna managed 10 of their own, it was clear that Merseyside was forced into a corner during a few spells. It is reckoned Slot has also realised this flaw as he tries to be humble despite the win.

Liverpool are now on eight wins out of nine games under Arne Slot. He is the first manager in the Reds with this record after nine games.
Every game from here on that he wins, he is up to set history. However, given his concerns and will to improve, he would be paying very little attention to glory. While the city will be in celebrations as Anfield is filled with European triumphs again, Slot will be turning to his playbook again.
The Reds face some big-time opponents this coming month. While many have speculated Slot has yet to face the real level of English top-flight, he is believed to be ready for the challenge. Liverpool, which will face Chelsea and Arsenal later this month, will travel to play Crystal Palace this weekend.
Currently being at the top of the table and a point clear of Manchester City, every game will be important for the rest of the season for Slot and his men. With a record 15 wins against Palace’s three, they will enter the field with confidence and look to grab all three points as Slot will look to extend his lead on top.
