Liverpool star Cody Gakpo has maintained his sensational consistency in performance during the international break for the Netherlands against Hungary. After a red card to their captain Virgil van Dijk, the Dutch side earned a 1-1 draw with 10 men.
The Netherlands conceded a first-half goal in the 32nd minute of the game after Hungary’s Roland Sallai scored a goal. The Dutch side dominated the possession but failed to capitalise as Hungary maintained their formidable defence against a high-quality offence.
However, in the 83rd minute, Gakpo once again saved the Dutch side by providing an assist to right-back Denzel Dumfries. Gakpo has maintained incredible consistency since facing stern criticism for his performance against Manchester United in the FA Cup loss.
According to SquawkaLive, Gakpo provided five key passes while maintaining 85% passing accuracy with five accurate crosses finding his teammates. The 25-year-old won six out of nine ground duels and made one tackle while fulfilling his defensive duties. The Dutchman also won three fouls and achieved two successful take-ons with two shots and two touches in the opposition box.
The 25-year-old faced heavy criticism from the fans and many pundits for his poor performance last season against Man United. Nevertheless, legendary manager Jurgen Klopp accepted the accountability for Gakpo’s struggle as he played him in several positions last season.
Gakpo’s versatility worked against him as he failed to contribute while playing in different positions according to the manager’s requirements. Nevertheless, Klopp shifted the Dutch international to his preferred left-wing role after the March international break and he delivered consistently.
Gakpo thrived when Liverpool’s team suffered a surprise late dip in form which cost the club major trophies last season. Nevertheless, the Dutchman continued his fine form at the international level in the Euro 2024 competition during the summer.
Gakpo has continued to perform brilliantly under the new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot despite facing limitations in game time. With Luis Diaz in incredible form as well, Slot refrained from using a rotation policy during the start of the season.
