Liverpool’s Kelleher Shines Despite Blunder in Ireland’s Defeat
Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher stopped Greece from achieving a victory by a bigger margin against Ireland in their 2-0 domination. However, the 25-year-old’s late blunder tainted his heroic performance when Greece’s Petros Mantalos sealed the victory in the 91st minute.
Greece scored the first goal in the 48th minute through a deflected shot from Anastasios Bakasetas from Christos Tzolis’s assist. The hosts maintained their dominance during the game with 55% of the possession, winning key battles against the Irish side.
Greece enjoyed 21 shots compared to Ireland’s eight in the UEFA Nations League, League B, Group Two game on Sunday. Greece are at the top of their group table with 12 points and Ireland are third with only three points.
Nevertheless, Kelleher’s strong performances kept his side in the game until the extra time of the second half against Greece. According to the SofaScore, the 25-year-old made five saves, one clearance from punch and one high claim in the game.
Kelleher also made one successful run out to eliminate an attack while making five saves from inside the box. The Irishman enjoyed 65% passing accuracy with 47 touches, making five accurate long passes for his team.
Liverpool’s number-one goalkeeper Alisson Becker suffered a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace, forcing him out of action. According to Sky Sports, the Brazilian will not return until after the November international break which forces unwanted changes.
Liverpool have a strong goalkeeping department with Kelleher and Vitezslav Jaros as the deputy to Alisson. While Jaros substituted Alisson in the game against Palace, Kelleher is the number two goalkeeper at the club.
