Liverpool star forward Cody Gakpo believes that last season’s push for every trophy could propel them further under Arne Slot. Liverpool missed out on the Premier League and the Europa League late last season due to a late bad patch.
The Reds’ team under legendary manager Jurgen Klopp suffered a sudden collective drop in form due to weariness and complacency. The Reds fought with a severe injury crisis throughout the last season as their defensive vulnerabilities haunted them continuously.
However, Liverpool have started the current season strongly and worked on their last season’s issues in defence. Slot has made few changes in the tactical style of play but the philosophy and attacking approach remain the same.
Liverpool are now more focused on maintaining control of the game instead of making direct attacks and counter-attacks. The new style of play demands more control of the game, increasing efficiency and allowing players to rest.
Liverpool are currently at the top of the Premier League table, winning six out of their first seven games. Furthermore, they have won nine out of their first 10 games in all competitions, only conceding four goals.
Speaking to Sky Sports Premier League (via X), Gakpo outlined the team’s ambitions for this season after a strong start. He said:
“Hopefully, we can win everything. At the start of the season, we are in all competitions and yea when you participate in a competition, you participate to win so that’s how it goes, and I think last season we showed that we could do it, ah we were very close to a lot of things [trophies] but yea we missed it in the end a little bit but that also gives us hope and strength for this season that we know weL could come that far so this season we can push even further”
Liverpool faces a tough test after the October international break when the games happen fast with less time for recovery. The Reds are facing tough opponents like RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid in the Champions League.

They will face these teams between the Premier League games with many top English teams wanting to hinder their form. The Reds’s biggest opponents throughout the last season were themselves and they need to avoid repeating the same self-destructive pattern to live up to Gakpo’s highlighted demand for the current season.
