The saga between Liverpool and Anthony Gordon has been well-documented, with both parties linked to each other last year. The anticipated transfer turned out to be one of the summer’s biggest surprises when it didn’t go through. Although Gordon is still at Newcastle United and appears to have signed a new contract, Mark Lawrenson suggests that Liverpool has still benefited from the unsuccessful move to Anfield.

Liverpool backed to retain interest in Anthony Gordon.

The Reds struck a deal that valued winger Anthony Gordon at £75 million, which would have included Joe Gomez moving to Newcastle United for £45 million, but the Magpies ultimately decided against the transfer.

Mark Lawrenson, the esteemed former center back and Liverpool Legend shares a few words about the upcoming winger and shares positivity about Arne Slot’s takeover.

Expert’s Views

Mark Lawrenson speaking on behalf of Sports Casting says,

“Gordon is without doubt a player Liverpool will keep an eye on,” says Lawrenson. “He’s got great ability, and has learned how to play football properly. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that whatsoever. He knows what’s expected of him and he’s lightning quick.”

“He has done Arne Slot a bit of a favors this season because Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo have got their heads down and thought ‘crikey, if he turns up on the doorstep we might not be playing on a regular basis’.”

“I mean, what’s he had to do to change much? He’s basically said ‘same as last year, boys’. He’s tweaked little things which are good and it’s helped Liverpool start really well.”

Lawrenson believes that the success under former manager Jurgen Klopp has paved the way for Arne Slot to hit the ground running at Liverpool. Drawing on his own experience, Lawrenson recalled playing under three different managers during the club’s dominant spell in the 1980s. Bob Paisley, who signed him from Brighton, was succeeded by his assistant Joe Fagan before the club made the surprising decision to appoint Kenny Dalglish as their first and only player-manager to date.

With the Gordon deal falling through and a move for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi also failing, Liverpool’s sole signing this season was Federico Chiesa from Juventus. Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to arrive next summer, and Mark Lawrenson expects more transfers to follow, especially with key players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah potentially leaving on free transfers. It’s clear Liverpool face a pivotal summer ahead.
