Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold could depart club in the winter
Liverpool full back Trent Alexander-Arnold is in the final few months of his contract with the Reds. If they fail to reach an agreement with him imminently, he will be free to walk away as a free agent in the summer – a prospect which the club will be intent on avoiding given the defender’s importance to their team.
Real Madrid are among those interested in acquiring the English international as a free agent. The Whites need a long-term solution in the right back position with Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez beyond their 30s and see Alexander-Arnold’s capture on a free transfer as the perfect addition to their envious sporting project.
MARCA journalist Jose Felix Diaz has reported that Real Madrid could enter the transfer market in January and look to sign Alexander-Arnold in a cut-price deal in the winter itself after Carvajal’s ACL injury, which is going to cost him the remainder of the season. That said, Vazquez is the only natural right back available at Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal at the moment.
Liverpool need an answer from Alexander-Arnold sooner rather than later on what he plans to do following this season. The player has kept his cards close to his chest regarding questions over his future but advances from Real Madrid could admittedly be too good to deny even for a homegrown player from Melwood like the 25-year-old.
Unless Alexander-Arnold himself expresses a desire to pursue a challenge in Madrid, Liverpool are unlikely to sell him even if the 15-time European champions propose an offer, especially midway through the season. The Reds will retain hope that they can tie their vice-captain to a new contract as opposed to losing him on a free transfer.
