Liverpool have been linked with multiple central defenders off late as the Merseyside Reds look to add depth and quality to the position owing to the lack of both at the heart of the defence. The Merseyside Reds are really thin in the central defensive position as they have failed to bring in a replacement for Joel Matip, who left Anfield Stadium in the summer window.
Now with no Matip, complemented by the availability issues with Quansah and Gomez, Arne Slot is left with very few options in the CB role. Things get more complicated as 33-year-old Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk has been linked with a move away from the Reds, with his contract at L4 coming due at the end of the ongoing campaign, and there are real possibilities that he could bid adieu to Liverpool, and they will be left with nowhere to go.
And looking at such potential, the chiefs at Kirkby have already started vying for potential replacements for the centre-back, and they identified high-flying German defender Nico Schlotterbeck. The 24-year-old has been extensively impressing at Borussia Dortmund, and he could be available for a €60-70 million transfer in the upcoming 2025 windows.
Liverpool faces Madrid competition for Schlotterbeck
However, while the Reds ponder on his signing, Real Madrid are again looking to spoil the part at Anfield Stadium as Florentino Perez reportedly wants to bring Germany centre-back to Santiago Bernabeu, per Spanish outlet Defena Central, who reports that the two clubs could have helped with informal talks about the defender in yesterday’s Real Madrid game against Borussia Dortmund.
For Liverpool, Madrid’s involvement would complicate things to land Nico; we will have to see how Slot & Co. would push for his signatures in the coming months.
