Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher demands more from Dominik Szoboszlai despite his hard work playing a crucial role in recent success. Szoboszlai has played as the most advanced central midfielder with his competition, Harvey Elliott, currently recovering from a foot fracture.
The Reds have started their season strongly with 11 victories from 12 games in all competitions under Arne Slot’s guidance. Liverpool have displayed strength in both defensive and offensive phases of the game, showcasing more control and patience in possession.
However, there is a lot of room for improvement as the project under Slot is new and players are adjusting. Furthermore, the fixture congestion will push the threshold of the team’s fitness and ability to maintain consistency in winning games.
Liverpool have won the games despite not playing at their best which shows efficiency in getting the results despite adversities. Slot has inherited a squad with enough depth to counter the fixture congestion if the majority of players remain fit.
Carragher wrote in The Telegraph column that Liverpool lacks a dynamic midfielder that other title contenders have in their team. He wrote:
“When comparing the full-strength Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City starting XIs, the title rivals have more quality in a particular area. Liverpool are short of a Martin Odegaard, Phil Foden or Kevin De Bruyne-style attacking midfielder – that X Factor in the middle of the park who elevates a side to the next level.”
Liverpool legend Carragher highlighted the performances of Szoboszlai so far, demanding more contribution in front of goal from the Hungary captain. He said:
“Dominik Szoboszlai has performed well off the ball and he brings energy to the team – doing the ‘dirty work’ as he puts it – but for all the possession he gets in good areas, he needs to be more productive in terms of his assists and goals. We are yet to see if that is part of his game. For the £60 million he cost, he too often leaves me wanting more. It does not need to all be ‘dirty’ work when you have the time and space on the edge of the penalty area to find a team-mate or unleash a shot.”
While Carragher makes many valid points about Szoboszlai’s need to contribute, Liverpool are in no rush to seek replacements. The Hungary captain deserves more time to prove his technical qualities, glimpses of which we have seen since last season.

Furthermore, Elliott’s return to the squad is the right kind of competition that could drive Szoboszlai to improve his end product. Any new potential signing could hinder both Elliott and Szoboszlai’s development or destabilise the dynamic within the team. Furthermore, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has the qualities to play as the number 10 if required.
