Liverpool’s impressive start to the season under new manager Arne Slot continues to break records, with their latest win carrying significant meaning. On Wednesday, the Reds secured a 1-0 victory against Leipzig in the Champions League, one of the clubs that Jurgen Klopp—who recently departed Liverpool after nearly nine years—will soon manage in his new role overseeing global soccer at Red Bull.

Few could have anticipated that Slot would emerge from Klopp’s shadow so quickly. Liverpool has now achieved the remarkable feat of winning their first six away games of a season for the first time in the club’s 132-year history.

In addition, Slot is the first manager in English top-flight history to win 11 of his first 12 games across all competitions, according to statistics from Sqawka.

The Dutchman has led Liverpool to the top of the Premier League just eight games into the season. Following a third consecutive win in the Champions League, Liverpool now stands alongside Aston Villa as one of only two teams with a perfect nine points so far.

What it means for the Dutchman

“So many great teams have worn this shirt, so many great managers have been at this club,” Slot said. “So if you can achieve something that hasn’t been achieved before, it is almost impossible at a big club like this. To achieve it is always nice.

“Records are nice,” Slot added, “but there is something else that is more nice than records and we both know what I mean, I think — that’s trophies.”

Darwin Núñez netted the sole goal of the match in the 27th minute, while Liverpool relied on two crucial saves from backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who stepped in for the injured Alisson Becker, to secure the victory.

Slot remarked, “If we had left this place with a draw, I would have truly felt we lost something. For the 70 minutes prior, apart from perhaps the first 10, we dominated the game.”
