Pundit acknowledges Liverpool’s tactical mastery vs Arsenal

Liverpool rubbed shoulders with potential title contenders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium this weekend in what was potentially their most difficult fixture since Arne Slot took over the reins at Anfield Stadium. It was one of the games that has a feel about it, one where both the teams are going to deploy different structures and styles to get an upper hand on any given sequence.

Arsenal are one of the best teams in Europe, and coming away to the Gunners and getting a draw has to be a massive result for the Dutch head coach.

Slot’s tactical tweak impresses Nevin

Trent trumps Jack Grealish as England down Finland.
Nevin highlights Slot’s bold decision

It was a game that could have gone both ways, and little margins mattered. One of the margins that could have tweaked both sides was when the Merseysiders defender Konate was slotting in on the right back to give Trent Alexander Arnold the freedom to roam around further ahead on the pitch.

While this gave the visitors a numerical advantage going forward, it left a massive space to exploit behind, which could have proven fatal as the Gunners tried to exploit it by lobbing the ball in behind Martinelli; however, that didn’t come about with the French defender doing a massive job to limit any damage.

And former Everton and Chelsea winger Pat Nevin acknowledged this tactical change by Slot’s on BBC Radio 5 Live:

Trent Alexander-Arnold is now no longer getting back, so he is asking Ibrahima Konate to come out and play right back. It seems that Liverpool have now gone to a back three.

Liverpool’s second goal (equaliser) kind of came through a similar path with Trent laying off to Nunez, who squared to Salah for the Egyptian to put it past Raya. This is a depiction of how the Reds tactically out-smarted the Gunners; however, it was a high-rick-high-return strategy from Slot.
