Liverpool defensive midfielder Tyler Morton delivered a strong performance after earning a start against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday. The Reds beat Brighton 2-3 in the Carabao Cup fourth-round fixture at the American Express Stadium to reach the quarter-finals.

Liverpool star Cody Gakpo provided two sensational goals in the second half to give the visitors a comfortable 2-0 lead. However, Jarell Quansah’s mistake allowed Simon Adingra to score for the Seagulls in the 81st minute and put late pressure.

The Reds scored their third goal in the 85th minute from Luis Diaz to reestablish a two-goal lead against Brighton. However, the Seagulls scored their second goal from Tariq Lamptey in the 90th minute but Liverpool made it to full-time.

Morton played until the 64th minute when head coach Arne Slot substituted him for the first-choice midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. The 22-year-old lived up to his head coach’s faith in his one-hour performance for the Reds, maintaining the midfield stability.

According to SofaScore, Morton made 32 passes with 81% passing accuracy from 45 touches which includes one accurate long ball. The young Englishman earned one assist by unleashing Gakpo at the right moment and played dominantly as a left-central midfielder.

The 22-year-old also won three out of seven ground duels, making one clearance, two interceptions and three tackles for Liverpool. Furthermore, Morton blocked one shot in his all-round performance when both teams pressed each other into making attacking openings.

Many fans believed that Liverpool would sell or loan Morton during the summer due to the depth in the midfield. However, the 22-year-old stayed as a backup to the first-team regulars and such performances could help him promote further.
