Liverpool star Curtis Jones shined in midfield against Bayer Leverkusen, delivering a sensational playmaking performance in the Champions League night. The Reds beat Leverkusen 4-0 at Anfield in their fourth Champions League game of the season to secure the top.
Both Liverpool and the German club battled for dominance in the first half, cancelling each other out with their tactics. However, Liverpool raised their intensity in the second half and scored four goals in the final 30 minutes against Leverkusen.
Luis Diaz scored a hat-trick while Cody Gakpo provided a fantastic headed goal for the Reds to secure their victory. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has used the squad depth wisely during the early stages of the current fixture congestion.
The Dutchman put Jones over Dominik Szoboszlai to bring control within the midfield and the Englishman kept his coach’s faith. According to Sofascore, the 23-year-old enjoyed 90% passing accuracy from 30 passes and 51 touches, enjoying 100% successful dribble attempts.
Furthermore, Jones created one big chance which Diaz scored, earning him a fine assist in an all-round performance in midfield. The Englishman had 100% crossing and long-ball accuracy and he won four out of five ground duels against Leverkusen.
Jones earned two fouls for Liverpool and made one interception against Leverkusen before earning his rest with a 73rd-minute substitution. Liverpool have fantastic variety in their squad with different styles of midfielders providing their unique attributes for Slot to use.
The Reds need to maintain this high level of consistency in winning games despite not reaching their best form yet. Jones has struggled to break into the international setup for England despite delivering incredible performances.
