TNT Sports pundit Steve McManaman calls Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher a “superstar” after his Saturday’s stunning performance against Aston Villa. The Reds beat the Villans 2-0 at Anfield in the Premier League showdown right before the upcoming November international break.
Liverpool have maintained their solid start to the season with 15 victories from 17 games in all competitions so far. Despite their impressive success, the Merseyside giants are still in the transition phase after Arne Slot succeeded legendary Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool have won these games despite having a lot of room for improvement which is essential to win major trophies. Top Premier League-winning sides in the past have displayed a similar trait of winning winnable games irrespective of their form.
The Reds have maintained their defensive dominance despite losing Alisson Becker which is playing a crucial role in their consistency. Alisson suffered a hamstring injury before the October international break, allowing Kelleher to take the mantle of the first-team goalkeeper.
The Brazil international has already missed eight games in all competitions for Liverpool this season due to his ill-timed injury. Alisson suffered the same problems last season which allowed Kelleher to display his immense talent at the top-most football level.
Speaking to TNT Sports, McManaman highlighted the incredible performance of Kelleher to maintain the defensive formidability for Liverpool this season. He said:
“Look at the goalkeeper [Kelleher]. He’s a superstar, isn’t he? Caoimhin Kelleher. He played more games last year than Alisson because of injuries, he’s done exactly the same this year. If you have the quality behind you – Trent Alexander-Arnold went off today and Conor Bradley seamlessly comes in – if you’ve got that, great.“
Kelleher played a pivotal role in the Klopp era when Liverpool won two Carabao Cup competitions with his heroics. The 25-year-old has voiced his preference to play as the first-choice goalkeeper at a top club and understands that Alisson remains a first-choice here.
