Liverpool plot Guehi’s signing to replace Van Dijk

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is in the last few months of his contract at Anfield. Though the prospect of his renewal is gaining traction and looking like a realistic possibility, the Dutchman is aged 33 and needs to be replaced for good sooner rather than later with a younger option.

In their bid to do the needful, Liverpool are exploring a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The English international’s stock has been on the rise for a few months now, more so after his displays for the Three Lions at Euro 2024, and after a failed swoop by Newcastle United in the summer, he has established himself on Liverpool’s radar for 2025.

TEAMtalk has reported that Marc Guehi is ‘admired greatly’ at Liverpool, who would be willing to make an investment on his signing. Palace slapped him with a price tag worth £75 million in the summer transfer window this year, although that could change significantly next year, especially if the Eagles are relegated to the Championship.

With that said, Liverpool might not encounter too many difficulties from a financial standpoint in closing out Guehi’s transfer given that there is a clear admiration towards him. The player is currently paid just £50,000 per week at Selhurst Park, as per Capology, so personal terms will not be a deterrent either.

Newcastle United are also likely to show an interest in Guehi next year but with Liverpool in line to finish in the top four and feature in the Champions League next season, the upper hand in the transfer race could belong to them. It will be interesting to see which way the tide swings next summer, though there is every reason to believe that Anfield will be Guehi’s next home.

Apart from him, Sevilla defender Loic Bade’s name has also been mooted but it is unlikely for him to be prioritised over Guehi barring any unforeseen circumstances.
