Liverpool plot Quenda’s signing to replace Salah next year
Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah remains by far their best player even under Arne Slot. The Egyptian international has started 2024/25 in familiar form and will be very crucial to the team’s hopes of winning the Premier League. However, he is aged 32 and is in the final months of his contract, though renewal talks could begin sooner rather than later.
Nevertheless, the Reds remain committed to bringing in a long-term replacement for their star man and it seems like their preference is towards bringing in a very young player, who could perhaps be Salah’s understudy before taking over the reigns from him some time down the line. To that note, they have identified Sporting Lisbon teenager Geovany Quenda.
According to Caught Offside (h/t Fichajes), the Reds are the latest entrants in the race to land the 17-year-old, thereby joining Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. While Mikel Arteta sees him as a possible back-up behind Bukayo Saka at the Emirates Stadium, Chelsea’s and United’s interest comes off the back of wanting to build younger squads.
Quenda has a release clause worth £83 million in his contract and given the demand for his services, coupled with his sky-high potential, Sporting Lisbon might not be willing to negotiate a lower price. Therefore, it remains to be seen if Liverpool are willing to formalise their interest in the former Benfica prodigy some time next year, or if they would prefer an alternative.
As far as Quenda is concerned, he might be far too young to join a club like Liverpool next year. His age understandably makes him a very inexperienced option as well, more so when it comes to replacing Mohamed Salah. His price tag could also be a deterrent as the Reds may be unwilling to spend that much money on a player who has barely proven himself on the senior stage.

Meanwhile, the likes of Karim Adeyemi, Mohamed Kudus and Rodrygo could be far better options given that they are all very established names in the top European leagues and have proven their qualities over several years.
