After a rocky start to the season, Liverpool’s Curtis Jones has silenced doubters with a string of standout performances. The 23-year-old has been pivotal for the Reds, starting three of their last four matches and shining brightly on his England debut.
Lee Carsley, impressed by Jones’ talent, labelled him one of the best players he’s ever coached—a sentiment the midfielder validated with a well-taken goal against Greece.

Yet, despite his consistent form, Liverpool legend Steve Nicol remains unconvinced by the young star’s potential, leaving many scratching their heads.

Steve Nicol questions Liverpool star Curtis Jones despite solid England debut.

Jones partnered with Conor Gallagher in midfield in a 4-2-3-1, dictating the tempo in the heart of the pitch. He then sealed the night in style, scoring England’s third with a brilliant backheel that crowned his Man of the Match display.

Since making his debut in 2019, Jones has played nearly 150 games for Liverpool, winning five major trophies including the Premier League but he only earns  £15,000 per week which is not actually a deserving wage for the hard worker.

Steve Nicol Questions Curtis Jones’ Role at Liverpool

Steve Nicol acknowledged that Curtis Jones boosted his reputation with a solid display against Greece but expressed doubts over his ability to maintain consistency at Liverpool, citing previous spells of drop-offs or injuries, though he noted signs of improvement this season.

The Pundit speaking on ESPN via Youtube, stated

“Today he was great, his goal stood out and he started things for England at the top of his own penalty box,”

“He was always available, made the right pass and started everyone up. But I’m really stuck in the middle with him.”

“When he’s at Liverpool, he gets 2-3 games and there seems to be a drop-off or he picks up an injury. But this season, when he’s played, there hasn’t been a drop off so maybe he’s turned a corner.”
