Mohamed Salah has been in sensational form this season, consistently delivering world-class performances. Renowned for his physicality and resilience, Salah continues to defy expectations at 32, showcasing remarkable fitness and determination as a living legend for the Reds. As James Pearce highlights on his article with The Athletic, “Physically, Salah is a machine, and his output is remarkable.”

Despite his undeniable quality, Salah’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain. The club faces a pivotal decision, striving to balance financial responsibility with their ambitions on the pitch.

James Pearce contends that if money becomes the primary factor, Salah is likely to join a Saudi Pro League club next summer, as no other league can match the wages offered there. This reality underscores the significant challenge Liverpool face in retaining one of their all-time greats.

Proposing a two-year extension, which would keep Salah at the club until 2027 when he turns 35, could be a practical solution. Pearce suggests that extending his contract on similar terms to his current deal would be a sensible approach.

Liverpool’s traditionally conservative wage structure promises sustainability, making Salah’s current £350,000-per-week salary a significant oddity itself. Offering similar or increased terms would push the boundaries of the club’s financial model. However, as James Pearce notes, “Signing a replacement for Salah would be more costly than giving him a two-year extension,” making a short-term deal the most pragmatic solution for both parties.

If Salah were to leave, his European options appear limited. While Paris Saint-Germain has the financial capacity to meet his demands, questions remain over whether Salah would find a move to PSG appealing. Pearce expresses doubts, writing, “Would he want to go there? I have my doubts,” reflecting the uncertainty surrounding his next step.

The Saudi Pro League, with its astronomical wages, presents a tempting alternative. However, moving to the Middle East would mean stepping away from the elite stage of European football. Salah’s passion for breaking records and competing at the highest level could ultimately influence his decision.

What Mohamed Salah brings to Liverpool is unparalleled in modern football. With 320 goal contributions in just 366 games, his impact is nothing short of Galáctico-level brilliance. Liverpool’s long-term strategy pivots on the decision surrounding his future. Retaining Salah delays the pressing need for a successor, while letting him go risks unsettling the team’s stability.

Under Arne Slot, Liverpool have displayed signs of reclaiming their dominant form, but losing Salah would undeniably create a significant void in the squad.
