Months into the season, the table-topping Reds have not yet been able to offer an update on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation, with Real Madrid lurking in the background.
According to a former Premier League winner, however, the Englishman should not make the move to LaLiga.
Emmanuel Petit urges Trent Alexander-Arnold to stay at Liverpool amid Real Madrid links
In a recent interview given to Instant Casino, former French midfielder Emmanuel Petit suggested that Trent Alexander-Arnold should remain at Liverpool and not move to Real Madrid.
“You know what, I’m not sure about Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid. He has the opportunity to stay at a huge club like Liverpool and he can become one of the best players in Liverpool history of a legendary and special club like Liverpool. That has to be something that is very interesting to him, especially as a local boy and a fan of the club.
“If he goes to Madrid, he’s going to play every single season hoping to win the Champions League, but I think it’s the same for Liverpool. Liverpool, every time they are involved in the Champions League, they want to win, but they don’t have the same recent history as Madrid in the competition. Madrid is the reference in the Champions League, but Liverpool is a huge club.”
Petit on Alexander-Arnold’s situation, as quoted by Liverpool Echo.
Speculation continues surrounding the 26-year-old, whose £180k-per-week Liverpool contract is about to enter the final six months with no concrete update regarding an extension. Real Madrid have been the ones most prominently linked with him and, as things stand, will be able to approach him directly in January over a free move next summer.
Despite his contract situation, the England international remains one of the first names on Arne Slot’s teamsheet, having delivered two assists in 15 appearances this season across all competitions.
It’s not that simple
It’s not that Petit’s suggestion is entirely wrong here, but given that he too went to play for Barcelona when he got the chance back in his day, he of all player should understand the pull both Barcelona and Real Madrid continue to have over players, who continue to see those two institutions as the summit of their playing careers.
Still, it’s likely that Alexander-Arnold will remain at Anfield. Liverpool have an exciting project brewing and they’ll want their homeboy to stick around for at least the next couple of seasons.
When it’s Real Madrid on the other side, though, you just never know…
