Belgian club AA Gent are reportedly “already dreaming” of securing a massive deal with Premier League giants Liverpool for their standout young forward, Momodou Sonko. While Gent are experiencing an up-and-down season, several of their promising young players, including Sonko, are aiming to take the next step and join a major competition. Top clubs are keeping a close eye on their development.

Liverpool are one of the clubs closely monitoring the Swedish talent, with left-winger Momodou Sonko reportedly on their radar for quite some time.

The Reds have long been interested in Sonko, having scouted him extensively during his time at former club Hacken, according to Voetbal Nieuws. In fact, the forward was even a target for Anfield before he made the move to Belgium, where Gent secured his signature for a club-record €7 million (£5.9m/$7.3m) in January.

The Teenager is bound for Premier League football

The report reveals that Gent is hopeful Sonko can reach his full potential, which could prompt Liverpool to move for the 19-year-old, especially after the player himself confirmed that the Reds have been “following him closely.”

In his professional career, spanning his time at both Hacken and Gent, the Swedish forward has played 66 games and contributed to 25 goals—an impressive stat for a teenager. However, since his move to Gent, he is yet to find the back of the net after 8 league appearances.

Before joining Gent, a transfer to Merseyside was considered too big a step for Sonko, but Liverpool has continued to monitor his development. Talent scout Mateusz Belza has praised Sonko for his “dynamic fusion,” highlighting his “explosive and flamboyant winger traits” and describing him as a “thrilling and versatile attacking force.”

Sonko is known for his blistering pace, rapid acceleration, and exceptional dribbling ability, effortlessly beating defenders. While a move to Liverpool is not “immediately necessary” for the player or Gent at this moment, the report suggests that both parties are “dreaming” about a future transfer, particularly after the Reds’ interest in recent months.

The Sweden Under-21 international is regarded as a top talent, and Liverpool will undoubtedly continue to monitor his progress. However, there seems to be no urgency to sign Sonko at this stage, as the club remains focused on his development.
