“We dominated”- Liverpool star continues to put up sensational numbers in dream season
Whoscored revealed how Ryan Gravenberch is outperforming everyone in the Champions League amid a round of 16 qualification for Liverpool. The 22-year-old has played a pivotal role in the Reds’ dominant campaign, securing 17 victories from 19 matches this season.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot put the 22-year-old in the number six position from the start of this season. Slot made this change after the Reds failed to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi during the summer transfer window.
The Dutch international joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 under the legendary manager Jurgen Klopp. Gravenberch struggled with nagging injuries and inconsistency during his first season at Liverpool, showing glimpses of his immense talent.
Nevertheless, Slot’s appointment allowed many drastic tactical changes, particularly in the defensive midfield position, helping Gravenberch flourish. Slot uses the same philosophy that Klopp applied at the club, especially with a high-pressing system out of possession.
However, in possession, the head coach demands more control and communicates his specific ideas according to the opposition. Gravenberch fits the criteria perfectly, allowing him to play according to his strength while he enhances other required skills.
The new tactical style also leaves less space for the opposition to exploit, allowing Gravenberch to control his area comfortably. According to Whoscored (via X), Liverpool star Gravenberch has made more tackles and interceptions combined than any other midfielder in the Champions League this season (26).
Gravenberch’s Commanding Display Against Real Madrid
According to Sofascore, Gravenberch enjoyed 75 touches with 92% passing accuracy and one accurate long ball against Real. The Dutch midfielder showcased his defensive and offensive versatility with two ground duels won and one aerial duel won.

He also registered two interceptions and two tackles, further solidifying his importance to Liverpool’s midfield. Gravenberch’s control over the game was instrumental in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory against their bitter European rivals.
The Dutchman’s ability to dominate possession allowed Liverpool to dictate the pace against Madrid, especially in the second half. This tactical composure from the midfielder ensured Liverpool’s backline faced minimal pressure from the Los Blancos’ renowned attacking threats.
Speaking to Dutch media Ziggo (via @TheEuropeanLad/X), Gravenberch rubbed salt into Real’s wound by comparing their second-half performance with a training drill. He said:
“We dominated Real Madrid, especially in the second half. We barely gave any chances away. Kelleher saved the penalty and after that it became 1 big rondo on the pitch, if I can say that.”

Gravenberch’s comment showcased the confidence he has gained with the consistency in performances this season. The 22-year-old has become a pivotal figure for Liverpool, reflecting his growing maturity and adaptability under Slot.
Season-long consistency is the final hurdle towards greatness
Gravenberch consistently delivers high-level performances for Liverpool in the Premier League, Champions League, and other competitions. During the October and November international break, the Dutch international maintained his consistency while representing the Netherlands.
Gravenberch’s ability to replicate his Liverpool form on the international stage further highlights his growth as a player this season. Liverpool fans will hope that Gravenberch maintains this exceptional form as the season progresses. His ability to perform consistently will play a crucial role for Liverpool to achieve major trophies as the outcome.
Liverpool will face Manchester City next in the Premier League clash with the potential to change the title race for the better or the worse. The Reds need Gravenberch to maintain his high level of impact in all phases of the game.

Irrespective of his consistency, Liverpool could benefit from a worthy competition for the Dutchman by signing another defensive midfielder. Someone of a similar profile could push the 22-year-old to better himself further and also allow him to rest during the fixture congestion.
