Liverpool vs Man City match report: Mr. Guardiola welcome to Slot penitentiary
Liverpool have continued their impressive form with an emphatic 2-0 victory over title rivals Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday. The Reds secured a dominant victory after beating Real Madrid similarly in midweek during the Champions League game at Anfield.
Liverpool have now won 18 games out of 20 matches in all competitions with just a draw and a loss. They have only conceded 12 goals, showcasing a formidable defensive unit despite losing defender Ibrahima Konate to an unfortunate injury.
The Reds have also scored 44 goals in these 20 games, displaying the same attacking prowess from Jurgen Klopp era. Arne Slot inherited a formidable squad during the summer and installed his tactics subtly which has benefitted the senior squad.
Slot’s emphasis on control and patience, balancing risk and reward factors has played a key role in the Reds’ consistency. Very few media personnel and pundits predicted Liverpool to secure the top four, let alone challenge for the Premier League.
Meanwhile, the same pundits earmarked defending champions Manchester City as the title favourites alongside their past season’s closest rivals Arsenal. However, Slot has silenced many naysayers and stamped his name as the worthy successor to Klopp at Anfield this season.
On the other hand, Pep Guardiola is facing a mini-crisis, coming into this game with five losses and a draw. Many believed the Anfield game was the perfect place for Guardiola’s team to reestablish their dominance in the English league.
Full-match Analysis
The Reds made four changes from the Real game in midweek with two new injuries to Conor Bradley and Konate. Vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold returned from injury to replace Bradley while Joe Gomez replaced Konate in the defence. Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo replaced Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez amid the ongoing fixture congestion which demands a healthy rotation while keeping tactical requirements in mind
Liverpool started the game on the front foot and constantly tested the Citizen’s defence throughout the game, showing no remorse. While Man City dominated 56% of the possession, they managed to create one big chance compared to the Reds’ five.
Furthermore, Liverpool enjoyed 18 total shots compared to City’s eight shots throughout the game in front of Anfield faithfuls. Liverpool could have scored multiple goals in the first half itself with a header from Virgil van Dijk hitting the post.

Legendary forward Mohamed Salah created the first goal of the evening for Gakpo to tap in an easy chance. The 12th-minute goal only continued the trend of attacks from the home team while the visitors struggled to create.
The Citizen’s frustration continued to show throughout the first half with yellow cards to Matheus Nunes and Phil Foden. While Ryan Gravenberch also received a yellow for stopping a counter from IIkay Gundogan, Liverpool enjoyed securing loose balls consistently.
Manuel Akanji also received a yellow card for a poor foul on Gakpo before the halftime, displaying further frustration. During the second half, the same dominance from the Reds continued but they allowed City to have more possession.
However, the Citizens lacked the conviction to threaten the Reds’ defence despite Gomez making a rare appearance to replace Konate. In the 76th minute, Stefan Ortega conceded a straightforward penalty by fouling Luis Diaz, giving Liverpool a golden chance. Salah easily converted the penalty to redeem his miss against Real during the midweek and maintain his goalscoring form.
The Road Ahead
Liverpool have now secured a nine points lead over second-placed Arsenal as Man City drops to fifth position in the Premier League. However, the Premier League remains unforgiving with punishment waiting for any team that shows a little complacency.
Furthermore, the Reds will play many upcoming games away from Anfield with Newcastle United clash awaiting them next. They will face Everton in the Merseyside derby next weekend in an away game during the gruelling congested period.
