Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes that struggling Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez will leave the club in the upcoming transfer windows. Newcastle United stopped Liverpool’s winning form with a 3-3 draw at St James Park on Wednesday night, raising many questions.
While Liverpool fans should not dwell too much on the result despite conceding a late equalizer, there are persistent issues. Newcastle have already beaten Arsenal at home and drew level with Manchester City so the result is not completely negative.
Caoimhin Kelleher made a poor decision by letting a set-piece delivery go which allowed the Magpies to equalize. That moment is a good lesson for the players to understand the gravity of the situation they are in.

Every bad decision could have dire consequences and certain poor decisions cost the club two points in the title race. Arsenal and Chelsea are now seven points behind the Reds with no margin of error to potentially usurp Manchester City.
Beyond salvageable: Nunez and Liverpool are better off in separate ways
Meanwhile, Nunez once again missed key chances which has not helped his claim to solidify his place at the club. The Uruguayan international has scored crucial goals in the past and holds a decent enough stat as a number nine.
The 25-year-old has 36 goals and 19 assists from 114 appearances for the Reds since joining them from S.L. Benfica. However, Darwin has missed too many chances for a forward who cost Liverpool £85m in the 2022 summer transfer window
The 25-year-old’s teammates have consistently operated at the level that he has failed to reach as a number nine. Darwin’s overall contributions are immense and the fans rightfully applaud his passion but certain criticisms are also justified.
The Uruguayan’s constant missed chances only put more pressure on his teammates to compensate for those critical lost moments. There is an unsaid threshold in football which defines a player’s tenure at any club which Nunez has unfortunately crossed.
This threshold does not define the 25-year-old as he could easily fulfil his immense potential elsewhere, scoring goals for fun. However, fans and experts associated with Liverpool are gradually accepting that he cannot deliver those goals at this club.
Alexis Sanchez and Diego Forlan faced a similar fate at Manchester United just like Fernando Torres struggled at Chelsea. There are many cases in football where a world-class potential failed to live up to the expectations at one club.
Nunez has struggled to develop the level of consistency demanded from a number nine, whether due to the language barrier or sheer bad luck. Speaking in the Overlap (<a href="http://<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6QC-knevi10?si=7BYhN_WKclaNWwrp&start=5232" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen>via YouTube), Carragher predicted that Liverpool will sell Nunez during the upcoming transfer windows. He said:
“I’m not sure he will be here next season. I think Liverpool will move him on.”
Arsenal legend and generally unbiased pundit Ian Wright concurred with Carragher stating that Dovick Origi could score more than Liverpool star Nunez. He said:
“I would fancy Origi to score more than him,”
Diogo Jota’s persistent injury crisis
The forward issue extends beyond Nunez, as Diogo Jota remains persistently unavailable for the Reds, struggling with similarly poor reliability. While the Portuguese international is lethal and a constant contributor with clinical goals, his injury and overall contribution are poor.
Jota struggles to link up with his teammates which is as essential as scoring goals for a Liverpool forward. At the same time, the 28-year-old has missed 92 games for both the club and his country since joining Liverpool from Wolves under Jurgen Klopp.
As things stand, Liverpool lacks reliable goalscoring and constantly available number nine which should become a priority. Liverpool are actively pursuing Omar Marmoush as a potential target, with the Egyptian forward enjoying a prolific start to the season.
