25-year-old continues to enjoy difference-making run of form for Liverpool; numbers display impact

Liverpool star Cody Gakpo continues to shine with an important man-of-the-match performance against Leicester City during the 3-1 Anfield victory.  The 25-year-old scored a goal, provided an assist and had one of his goals controversially disallowed for offside.

Gakpo has continued his incredible form since the March International break of 2023, establishing himself as a pivotal player. The Dutchman faced criticism last season for his lack of contributions in front of goal as he played in numerous positions.

However, former legendary manager Jurgen Klopp put him in his natural left-wing position after the March international break, causing improvement. Under head coach Arne Slot, Gakpo has found another gear with the tactical tweaks favouring him and many other players.

The 25-year-old has scored 10 goals and provided four assists in 26 games in all competitions for Liverpool this season. Gakpo’s incredible form and his healthy competition with in-form Luis Diaz have played a pivotal role in his recent success.

The Reds have won 22 out of 25 games in all competitions with this emphatic comeback victory over the Foxes. Liverpool conceded an early goal but dominated the rest of the game, leaving no chance for Leicester to attack more.

According to Fotmob, Gakpo enjoyed 50 touches with six inside the opposition’s box with 67% shooting accuracy from three shots. The 25-year-old made 100% successful dribbles (three), delivering one accurate long ball while enjoying 92% passing accuracy (24 total passes).

The Dutch international created two chances for his teammates and won a total of eight duels during the game. Gakpo also worked hard to carry out his defensive duties, winning one tackle while making three recoveries and three defensive actions.

VAR disallowed the Dutchman’s second goal by deeming Darwin Nunez in the offside position in a controversial check. The incident brought up the argument of introducing semi-automated offside technology to avoid such unnecessary problems.

Nevertheless, Gakpo will have ample opportunities to score more goals and build upon his performance with already proven consistency.
