Slot reveals how he tweaked a Klopp tactic has unleash Liverpool superstar

Klopp’s attacking system was a pleasure to watch during his time at Liverpool. The Reds’ attackers thrived under the German, consistently causing problems for opponents with their direct approach. The wingers, like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, often cut inside to great effect, benefiting from the system.

Slot, however, takes a slightly different approach. When discussing Gakpo’s excellent form, he explained that, unlike Klopp, he prefers his wingers to stay wider. This tactic has allowed Gakpo to find himself in more one-on-one situations, making him a far greater goal threat than he was under Klopp.

Mane was undoubtedly the best left-winger Liverpool had during Klopp’s tenure, but Gakpo wasn’t far behind. The Dutchman also played up front under Klopp and delivered some impressive moments. However, he lacked the consistency that he’s now showing under Slot this season. Gakpo has made significant strides under Slot, becoming much more efficient, and the key factor behind this improvement is undoubtedly the system.

Slot when asked how Gakpo is playing so well, explained as per the Liverpool official site

 “I think the main difference maybe is that the set-up of the front three was a bit different [in the past] than the set-up now.

“We expect a bit from our wingers to keep it wide, to try to get them in one-v-one situations. Cody has done this really well. Lucho has done this really well when he played from the left but Lucho is, in our opinion, also capable of playing as a nine; he did that really well against Spurs.

“Against Spurs, it was mainly maybe Lucho and Mo that were dominant, now it was Cody again, together with Mo. It’s just nice to have so many options, in every position actually but also in the front three.”
