This means more- Former Real Madrid star sends subtle message to Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool legend Steve McManaman talks about wanting the youngsters to play as much as possible.

Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman provided an insight into his time at Real Madrid which Trent Alexander-Arnold should take seriously. McManaman joined Madrid from Liverpool as a free agent in the summer of 1999, hurting his legacy at the club.

The Englishman made 364 appearances for Liverpool,  helping Liverpool win the FA Cup in 1991-92 and League Cup in 1994-95. McManaman’s name popped up recently during the heated debate between Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp which involved any potential regret.

Due to his success with the Galacticos, Redknapp outlined that McManaman would not care about what the Liverpool fans think. However, this surprising admission contradicts what Redknapp assumed, showcasing that success and culture require a balance that many people misunderstand.

Furthermore, Redknapp weakly argued for enjoying a new culture, ignoring that modern professional players can do so on holidays given their earnings. Many Liverpool fans view McManaman’s legacy positively despite the dark period linked to the “Spice Boys” and his eventual departure.

Speaking to the We Are Liverpool Podcast (via Express), McManaman revealed the surprising truth about his time with Real that Alexander-Arnold should know. The former English international admitted to having a language barrier problem and his inability to share success with his peers. He said:

“I remember we’d just won the Champions League and I’d only been at the club 10 months, and the lads were in the dressing room singing Spanish songs and lifting the president up in the air,” he continued. “I [joined in], but I just felt I was a bit of a fraud. I did. Because they’re all singing these Spanish songs and I just thought to myself, ‘This is just weird’. I got my phone and I took myself out of the dressing room and I went along the corridor and sat on the floor and listened to messages… But I wasn’t in the dressing room celebrating, because I thought it was all a bit weird. “I remember thinking, ‘I would have loved to have done this with Liverpool’, because I would have been right at the forefront of it all and sort of knowing all the words and really throwing myself into it. I was very much on the peripheries of all the [Madrid] celebrations just because I couldn’t understand it.”

The complexities have drastically increased despite the reduction of the language barriers due to the inclusivity in modern football. While Alexander-Arnold would not share the same concern about language issues as McManaman, the feeling remains the same.

Liverpool and Real are simply very different clubs with different values despite sharing the same ambitions. Former legendary manager Jurgen Klopp famously told Coutinho before he joined Barcelona, a simple fact that holds true for everyone. He said:

“I told [Coutinho] to stay here and they will end up building a statue in your honour. Go somewhere else, to Barcelona, to Bayern Munich, to Real Madrid, and you will be just another player. Here, you can be something more.”
