Liverpool kick off their FA Cup campaign on Saturday vs Accrington Stanley

Liverpool commence participation in their fourth competition of the 2024/25 season with Arne Slot’s FA Cup debut set to occur at Anfield on Saturday, January 11th, at 15:00 local time. The Reds host Accrington Stanley in the round 3 fixture of the competition, which could potentially help them complete a historic treble at the end of this season.

Liverpool were defeated in the Carabao Cup in the midweek semi-final first leg versus Tottenham Hotspur but are expected to field a heavily rotated side against their opponents on the weekend. The last time Liverpool won the FA Cup was in 2022 and having fallen short of a treble that year, the motivation in their camp this time around will be at an all-time high.

Team News

Liverpool

Liverpool come into the game without any suspensions looming over Arne Slot’s squad selection. There are likely to be a few absentees, however, as Dominik Szoboszlai is ill while Joe Gomez has suffered a hamstring injury and will miss the remainder of January. Tyler Morton is a doubt having picked up an ankle injury, with his availability assess on a day by day basis. Jarell Quansah is also likely to miss out having pulled up in the Tottenham game on Wednesday.

The big news from the selection for Saturday is likely to see the likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have a well-earned rest. Federico Chiesa could start his first Liverpool game in several weeks, however, whereas wholesale changes will occur elsewhere in the squad as well considering the ease by which Liverpool should be able to win the game.

Predicted Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Bradley, Endo, Konate, Tsimikas; Jones, Nyoni, Elliott; Chiesa, Jota, Nunez

Accrington Stanley

Accrington Stanley have no injury worries as all their players are fit and in contention for their visit to Anfield. As with Liverpool, they have no suspension issues to deal with either. Accrington’s previous two games in the FA Cup were against Rushall Olympic and Swindon Town. The latter was a round 2 clash, which they won on penalties after the full-time score was 2-2.

The League 2 side are one of the more famous club in England and around the world from the lower divisions, so their fixture against Liverpool has every reason to be a historic affair. With that being said, they should still be heavy underdogs and will not be expected to come away with anything in an ideal world.

PREDICTED ACCRINGSTON STANLEY XI (4-2-3-1): Crellin; Love, Rawson, Awe, Woods; Martin, Whalley; Hunter, Khumbeli, Woods; Walton

Prediction

Liverpool 3-0 Accrington Stanley

Liverpool will not field their best starting eleven against Accrington Stanley while the visitors will come to Anfield with the motive of surviving in the match for as long as they possibly can, and will defend deep as a result. Having said that, the Reds will dominate in all aspects and should be able to grab a comfortable 3-0 success versus the League Two outfit.
