Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk joked about the club going through a crisis amid a recent struggle with their form. Van Dijk highlighted the competitiveness of the Premier League with any club capable of getting a result against top teams.
The Reds have started 2025 with a struggle to get consistently good results despite enjoying more dominance in each game. Liverpool lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup and drew twice in the Premier League so far this year.
While the draw against second-placed Nottingham Forest was hard-fought, the Manchester United result disappointed the fans due to complacent performances. The Reds achieved their only victory of the year so far against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup third-round clash.

Liverpool showcased a formidable defence during the early stages of the season but have conceded a lot since last December. The Reds have conceded 13 goals in all competitions since the beginning of December while conceding 26 goals this season.
Speaking to the reports (via BBC) about the current form, Van Dijk joked about Liverpool facing a crisis right now. He said:
“So are we in a crisis now? It only confirms the Premier League is a very tough league where you play against opponents who are very good. Every game is tough – we have to find a way to win. We have been outstanding the whole season with everything we have been doing. In games sometimes things doesn’t always go your way, [but] that’s part of being a football player. We can’t be perfect all the time, but all the hard work we have put in so far should give us the confidence to go out there and show who we are.”
There are moments in the recent performances when Van Dijk acted as a lone fighter in defence to protect Liverpool. The rest of the defenders alongside Alisson Becker need to raise their level going forward to avoid more unwanted results.
However, Liverpool dominated Forest, showcasing a strong defence apart from the early goal, forcing the hosts to park the bus. The only aspect in which the Reds failed was the quality of their finishing throughout the game.

Liverpool enjoyed a strong balance between the offensive and the defensive phases of their game with the team working cohesively. The Reds need to find that cohesion and help each other to achieve their collective goal of winning major trophies. Van Dijk will play a pivotal role for Liverpool going forward, both as the centre-back and the leader of the locker room.
