Liverpool head coach Arne Slot outlines consistency as the next obstacle for Darwin Nunez after his heroic performance against Brentford. Nunez scored two late goals in the extra time against Brentford, providing three points to Liverpool in the Premier League.
Liverpool dropped four points in the previous two Premier League games with two draws against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest. At the same time, Brentford have remained competitive and a tough side to beat at home, making the game tricky.
While the Reds dominated the match, they failed to find an incisive moment until the Uruguayan exploited a small space. The 25-year-old scored two quick goals in the extra time to secure the victory which gave a major psychological boost.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference (via Liverpoolfc.com), Slot outlined the next obstacle that Nunez needs to accomplish at Liverpool. He said:
“I think the most difficult [thing] in football for a team, but also for an individual, is to find consistency. Only a few players in the world are able to be at the same level every three days in a row. And then there’s a big, big, big group of players that are able to play very well many times but not every single time – I think he is one of the players that belongs to the group that is good many, many, many times. The next step for him – it would be nice – [is] if he can go into the bracket of the five, six, seven or eight players in the world that are every three days outstanding. I do know we have also a few players that are every three days of a very high standard. It’s a nice challenge for him to go to that group of players as well.”
Despite the insurmountable criticism, the Uruguay international has scored crucial goals for the Reds in his three seasons here. However, the price tag plays a major role for even those critics who want to see Nunez succeed at Anfield.
The 25-year-old has 39 goals and 21 assists from 123 appearances for the Reds since joining from Benfica. While the contribution is decent, the level at which Liverpool operates requires a far better output from their number nine.
Consistency is the only last obstacle that alludes to the Uruguayan international and achieving it could silence his doubters forever. Nunez has all the support and the quality to redeem himself at Liverpool and still write his legacy at Anfield.
