Liverpool urged to be wary of this European giant in the hunt for Champions League glory

Liverpool have proven themselves as the team to fear in Europe this season, with only two sides managing to beat them so far: giant-killers Nottingham Forest and the unpredictably inconsistent Tottenham. While Liverpool commands respect across the continent, a former Chelsea winger believes another team will be celebrating at the Allianz Arena in Munich in four months. He suggests this is a side even Liverpool will be eager to avoid.
Under the new guidance of Arne Slot, the Reds now have won all seven of their European matches this season, flexing an impressive catalogue as they had a commanding victory over German double winners Bayer Leverkusen and a dominant win against the champions of Europe, Real Madrid. Many pundits and bookmakers have labelled Liverpool as the favourites to be the European champions in May. However, during a discussion on ESPN FC, Craig Burley maintained his prediction that Inter Milan will take home this season’s Champions League, highlighting their strength across all positions on the field.

Craig Burley backs Inter over Liverpool for Champions League glory
Craig Burley’s focus on Inter’s impressive defensive record is justified, with the team conceding just one goal in seven European matches. However, they currently sit fourth in the standings, having scored only eight goals. For context, the already-eliminated Red Star Belgrade have netted 12 times.
Inter’s strong defence and ability to edge out tight games make Simone Inzaghi’s team a serious contender, especially after narrowly losing the final to Manchester City two years ago.
If Inter hold onto their fourth-place position after the league phase concludes next week, they won’t face Liverpool until the quarter-finals. Such a matchup would see the Reds return to the San Siro for the second time this season, following their 3-1 win over AC Milan in September.
Craig Burley expressed confidence in Inter Milan’s ability to win Serie A this season, praising their all-around game, including attacking strength, midfield solidity, and defensive resilience. He compared their current dominance to the days when Atlético Madrid were a feared opponent.
While acknowledging Liverpool as the best team right now with an impressive defensive record in the Champions League, Burley believes Inter are the side no one wants to face. He highlighted their toughness to break down an attacking threat, reaffirming his prediction that Inter will succeed this season.

Inter would undoubtedly pose a tough challenge for Slot’s side if the two teams were to meet in the knockout stages. However, just as Burley pointed out that no one wants to face the Nerazzurri, it’s hard to imagine many teams being eager to take on Liverpool in the Champions League either!
