Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool are closely monitoring Ajax defender Jorrel Hato to succeed Andy Robertson next season. Liverpool have enjoyed a strong season but there are some glaring gaps within the squad that they need to address.

The Reds’ head coach Arne Slot used the current season to thoroughly assess the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp. The Dutchman provided chances to each player to prove their worth and now has a good idea about the team.

While Liverpool have already enjoyed immense success under Slot, leading the Premier League table, there is room for further improvement. One of the departments that require the recruitment team’s attention is the defensive department which has faced an inconsistent season.

Liverpool’s defence started the season strongly, showcasing formidability and maintaining clean sheets but they faltered in the crucial middle phases. Robertson has struggled with inconsistency since last season when he suffered several unwanted injuries as he ages past his best.

Meanwhile, the beloved Scotsman’s second-in-command Kostas Tsimikas has also struggled with inconsistencies and injuries, failing to usurp the Scottish left-back. At the same time, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk continues to perform incredibly and consistently at 33 years of age.

Nevertheless, there is a glaring absence of a left-footed centre-back in the team and a good competition for Van Dijk. Liverpool are not helped by the injury issues of Joe Gomez that have hampered his whole career despite his qualities.

Slot’s style of play demands a fullback capable of playing in multiple variations according to the senior team’s tactical requirement. A player of Hato’s profile would suit them, a defender capable of playing as a centre-back and as a left-back.

According to Romano (via YouTube), Liverpool plans for at least two or three more scouting missions to assess Ajax star Hato. While the 18-year-old is highly rated and desired by many top European clubs, he is still gaining important experience at Ajax.
