Liverpool captain taking one game at a time to avoid complacency
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk declared that the team will continue to take one game at a time to avoid complacency. The Reds are currently at the top of the Premier League table as they enjoy a week-long break before facing Paris Saint-Germain.
Liverpool enjoyed a fantastic week after the congested period of tough fixtures as second-placed Arsenal stumbled while they won games. The Reds beat Manchester City 0-2 in the away game, followed by a convincing 2-0 Anfield victory over Newcastle United.
Meanwhile, the Gunners lost their home game to West Ham United and then drew Nottingham Forest in the away fixture. The 13-point gap between the two teams has provided some room for a breather, but the job is not done.

Liverpool suffered immensely from complacency during the latter stages of last season, combined with a severe injury crisis. The lesson from last season still resonates as the Reds’ fanbase wants their team to take each game seriously.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Van Dijk declared that Liverpool would take one game at a time to avoid complacency. He said:
“I think also because I’ve been twice on the wrong side. There’s no point thinking what could be. I think the main thing for all of us, and I can definitely confirm that the players will, is focusing on the next one and the next one. Now we have a little bit of a gap. We focus now on recovery of course and then we have a couple of days off and then we focus on the Champions League. It will be a very big test as well. Then we focus back on the league and go again.”
Liverpool have 10 Premier League games remaining, along with the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle and the Champions League clashes. The Reds finished at the top of the Champions League’s League Phase, but the new format presents no special treatment for the league toppers.

PSG are a formidable side that used the January transfer window to bolster the squad even further. The Reds will face the French club in the away game first, followed by the game against Southampton, before they face PSG at Anfield in the second leg.
Van Dijk has played a pivotal role for Liverpool, both as the primary centre-back and as the leader. The 33-year-old has bailed out his teammates several times this season with last-ditch tackles and defensive actions.
