Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk brushes off media narrative on Arsenal.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk believes “hard-working” midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai deserves all the plaudits for scoring two important back-to-back goals. Szobsozlai scored a goal against Manchester City in the 0-2 away win, followed by another crucial goal against Newcastle United.

The Reds convincingly beat Man City and Newcastle to secure six points, ending an intense and exhausting congested fixture period. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Premier League title rivals Arsenal dropped five points in their last two games, creating a healthy 13-point gap.

Szoboszlai has played a pivotal role for Liverpool this season, working hard in each phase as a number 10 midfielder. The 24-year-old’s work ethic compromises his ability to contribute consistently in front of goal, something that brought a slight criticism.

However, Liverpool fans have appreciated Szoboszlai’s incredible performances irrespective of the contributions as they drove the team to consistent success. Nonetheless, the Hungary captain possesses immense technical qualities and the potential to contribute a lot with regular goals and assists.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Van Dijk claimed that Szoboszlai deserves all the praise he has received recently after his goal-scoring Liverpool performances. He said:

“Everyone has to try to contribute to scoring goals. I’m very pleased for Dom for all his hard work that he puts in each and every game to be rewarded with goals and to be as important as he has been, especially in the last two games with the goals. I think the quality that Dom brings, the energy with the sprinting, the pressing and obviously on the ball he is a fantastic player – I’m very happy for him that in the last two games he scored two important goals. You just have to keep going and stay calm.”

Liverpool’s midfield trio of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Szoboszlai have played a very crucial role in their success. The Reds’ head coach Arne Slot demands balance in their approach, controlling the dichotomy of the risk and reward factor.

This style of play has allowed the team to control possession better and control the spaces when they lose possession. Szoboszlai’s work ethic plays a key role as he squeezes the spaces for the opponent to create, forcing them to make mistakes.
