Liverpool have returned to their top stature this season. They are within striking distance of a Premier League title, having lost only four matches to this point, with the Carabao Cup in their sights, being contested against Newcastle in the final on 16th March- a match that is expected to be an easy victory for the Reds.

While brilliant performances from such players as Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai have come to fruition, there is one player that has stood up in his prime form. Ex-Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel lauded a Liverpool talent blossoming under Arne Slot, stating that he was reminiscent of the Ballon d’Or holder Rodri.

Gravenberch has been a blessing in disguise this season. The Netherlands menace has played in a double pivot next to Mac Allister at Liverpool, putting in a string of top-draw performances. He has played almost every minute of both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, cementing himself as one of the finest in his position. But even Mikel has said that the Dutchman should get even more in return for all he has done.

Is Gravenberch reaching Rodri’s elite level?

Since signing for Liverpool in 2023, Ryan Gravenberch had struggled to get minutes under Jürgen Klopp. But under Arne Slot’s guidance has turned this Dutchman into a first-class defensive midfielder worthy of a Rodri comparison. Gravenberch now has 75 appearances for the Reds; he looks to be set for the long haul at Anfield.

John Obi Mikel praised Gravenberch’s performances, noting his influence on both ends of the pitch. Speaking on his Obi One podcast, Mikel said he appreciated defensive midfielders as one himself. He noted how Gravenberch disrupted opposition attacks, moved the ball forward, and pushed his side into an attacking position.

Mikel compared the Dutchman to Rodri as his contributions often go unnoticed, much like others in that position. Gravenberch’s talent to control the game is inspiring, with Mikel describing his performances as “absolutely fantastic.”

The Chelsea legend expressed his admiration for the 22 year old, speaking on his Obi One Podcast

“So because I am one, [he] plays in my position,” “When I see a player who’s doing so well, I become a huge fan.

“And for me, Gravenberch the way he plays, not only defending, breaking up players when he has the ball, you know, he drives the ball forward, he pushes the team forward.

“For me, I like, it’s a bit like Rodri. And for me, he’s been absolutely fantastic, really. I feel like players in your position, like even when you were playing, I feel like… we never get the credit.”

While the youngster is playing the football of his life, the concern is regarding how Gravenberch’s heavy workload this season could affect him with fatigue and injuries. To help him maintain form and longevity, Liverpool should consider acquiring another midfielder who could ease into Gravenberch’s role so he would not have to burden the specific role with additional tears and added strain. A like-for-like addition would bring in an extra layer of depth to the team and keep Gravenberch fresh and producing at full throttle during the course of the season.
