Adam Lallana has urged the Liverpool fans to create a special atmosphere at Anfield as the Premier League race heats up. The Reds are in a great position to break their Premier League duck, however, there have been some rumblings from the supporters at Anfield recently.
The fans were a little twitchy in the 1-1 draw against Leicester but Lallana believes the support can also have a negative effect on the opposition. The Englishman claimed that fans getting behind the home team can intimidate the opposition (h/t Express):
“I’ve played at grounds where it can feel intimidating and the noise is that loud and they’re getting behind the home team. Although I never came here many times as an away player, [the atmosphere] can have a negative effect on the opposition.”
The former Southampton star admitted that he knew Liverpool were keeping tabs on him back then, and spoke about our run in 2013-14.
The Reds missed out on the title under Brendan Rodgers, however, the Anfield crowd backed the team right until the end. Lallana wanted that atmosphere to be reciprocated this season:
“The atmosphere at Anfield in that run-in was epic. You just wanted to play for that team, in that team at that ground. It would be great if we can get similar atmospheres and a similar vibe around Anfield, during the warm-ups… they do really act as a 12th man.”
The Englishman is right in suggesting that the fans have to back the team right to the end, however, it is understandable that the supporters are a little jittery when the team doesn’t do well.
Liverpool didn’t look great in the 1-1 draws against Leicester City and West Ham United. They have had to mix the team up by playing midfielders as right-backs but that should change in the coming days.
