Latest Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk is a “shoo-in” for Player of the Year award

Liverpool and Everton played out a 0-0 draw at Goodison, which has hurt our chances of winning the Premier League. The points dropped by us sent Manchester City to the top of the table, and the Premier League title race is for them to lose now.

Mohamed Salah wasted the best chance of the game as his shot was saved well by Jordan Pickford, but one man stood tall amongst the other players at Goodison Park.

Virgil van Dijk was imperious at the back and easily swatted away any attack that the Toffees launched. The Dutch defender was everywhere, in a good way, and it was no surprise we came out with a clean sheet.

Liverpool’s defence has been excellent this season with Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville in awe of the former Southampton defender.

Van Dijk is the Player of the Year

The Sky Sports pair was speaking after the game and Neville loved the performance from the defender (h/t Daily Star):

“What a player he is, whenever somebody comes near him, he just deals with it.”

Carra then claimed that Van Dijk was almost guaranteed the POTY award, and added that Liverpool’s chances of winning the title depend on us keeping other teams out:

“Van Dijk is well in the running, if not a shoo-in for Player of the Year’. He looks like a man playing in a kid’s game. It feels like there’s more gears to go into.

“If Liverpool are going to win this league, it’s having Van Dijk and having the best defensive record in the Premier League.”

The Reds lie one point behind City with nine games to go. Liverpool have to get their mojo back in the next game against Burnley and hopefully, City drop points in the coming weeks.
