Liverpool FC transfer news: Maxwel Cornet could be the target for Reds in the summer
The Liverpool Echo reports that the Reds have been linked with several Lyon players in recent months.
Nabil Fekir was close to joining Liverpool last season until we pulled the plug on the deal at the last moment (h/t Liverpool Echo).
Dutch star Memphis Depay has also been linked, and the report claims that the former Manchester United star has a great relationship with Georginio Wijnaldum.
Houssem Aouar is an exciting French talent who has been linked with the Reds, however, the report names Maxwel Cornet as a possible arrival in the summer.
The Ivorian is currently away on AFCON duty with Ivory Coast and the report adds that Liverpool are interested in a versatile forward in the summer.
Cornet can play on either wing and is comfortable taking up the role of the lead striker too. The 22-year-old made 27 Ligue 1 appearances last season, with 15 of them from the bench.
The Ivorian scored seven goals and provided five assists for Lyon, and the report claims that the winger is yet to agree on a new contract with the French giants.
Cornet open to joining Liverpool
The 22-year-old’s current deal is until 2021 but he has spoken about playing for Liverpool after being asked about a potential move to Anfield by beIN Sports France (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“We met the president [Jean-Michel Aulas] in January, and I said I wanted to extend [my contract], but talks were not successful.
“Liverpool are a big club, any links are flattering. I’m under contract until 2021, but you never know in football so we’ll see.”
The report adds that Cornet might not be as expensive as Depay, and the Ivorian fits the kind of player Jurgen Klopp is looking for.

The Reds have had a low-key summer so far with only Sepp van den Berg joining the club but Cornet could be a smart signing for the future.
