Liverpool passed on the chance to sign Tanguy Ndombele
According to the Express, Liverpool decided to pass on the chance to sign Tanguy Ndombele in the summer before Tottenham Hotspur made their move for him.
The Reds have been vindicated in their decision as the French midfielder has struggled to make a positive impact in his debut season in North London. Ndombele was signed by Tottenham for a club-record fee of £55million.
The 23-year-old has made 27 appearances for Spurs this season and has contributed to two goals and four assists. Notably, he has played the whole 90 minutes just five times.
Ndombele’s performance against Burnley drew the ire of Mourinho, who came out hard on the midfielder in public. He skimmed no words in clearly revealing his displeasure at the player’s performances.
It is difficult to predict how he would have done had he made the switch to Anfield instead. A talented prospect, Ndombele showcased his skills to the English fans last season. He dominated Manchester City while playing for Lyon in the UEFA Champions League.
A coveted player in the summer, it was Tottenham who eventually got him. It is still early in his career to call him a flop but there is no doubt that he has been largely underwhelming.
Injuries too have not helped as the 23-year-old has picked up quite a number of injuries this season. It has to be remembered that he actually made a good start to life in England when he scored on his debut against Aston Villa.
More than his ability, it is his attitude and temperament that has been called into question. The player has shown a lack of hunger and desire to fight when the chips are down. Jurgen Klopp’s midfield may not be the most technically gifted but they are battlers who never give up an inch and keep fighting till the end.

In current form, Ndombele will get nowhere near Klopp’s system, with Micheal Edwards seemingly right about yet another transfer decision. Whether he goes on to prove us wrong in the coming years remains to be seen.
