One thing is for sure; Liverpool are in a dire need to buy a new left back to upgrade the spot. The Merseysiders have relied on their current number one, Alberto Moreno, but the Spaniard has failed on more than one occasion in recent times. Liverpool, so far have signed seven new players, and majority of them are the attackers, which eventually made Jurgen Klopp to use James Milner as a left back, and Liverpool’s legend Jamie Carragher said:
“James Milner has a good understanding of the game and great fitness levels, but of course Liverpool need to sign a left-back.
“They have sold Brad Smith to Bournemouth and you need two players for every position so they need someone else alongside Alberto Moreno.
“Milner did a good job against Barcelona but you certainly wouldn’t to go into the season without one more recognised left-back.”
Fortunately or unfortunately, this is true. Alberto Moreno has been failing to prove his worth since long time, yet many believed that the new season would bring a new hope, but the Spaniard’s performance against Arsenal said otherwise.
Throughout the window, Liverpool were linked with a number of defensive options like Raphael Guerreiro, who recently joined Borussia Dortmund, Ben Chilwell, who signed a new contract with Leicester and Jonas Hector, whose speculation has been struck in the middle of nowhere. Now, according to the reports from the Mirror, Chelsea have stepped up in the speculation and have made an enquiry for £20million-rated Hector.
Well, both the clubs need a left back, and it will be an interesting sight to see, where this 26-year-old will end up. Until then, we bring you a scouting report for Jonas Hector.
Who is Jonas Hector?
The Saarbrucken-born full-back, Jonas Hector, started his footballing career with SV Auersmacher, a regional team then in the fifth tier of German football. In 2010, the German was transferred to 1. FC Köln. After his wonderful performances, the full-back was promoted to the first team during the 2012-13 season. Aged 22, the defender made his debut in the second division of Bundesliga and eventually, he established himself as a first-team regular for Köln.
In the 2013-14 season, Hector helped his side to gain a promotion to the Bundesliga. At 24, the late bloomer, Hector, made his Bundesliga debut and played in all but one of FC Köln’s league matches. In his debut season in Bundesliga, he was named Köln’s Player of the Season for 2014–15. In 2015, Hector was also named FC Köln’s “Winner of the Year” by Cologne newspaper Express, who named the defender the club’s “Mr. Reliable”
Hector, who made 34 appearances for Köln last season, was reported to have the most crosses blocked in Bundesliga, recording a total of 20 blocks.
Style Of Play:
Standing at 6’1, the 26-year-old is praised for his ability to defend set-pieces effectively, something which Liverpool are unable to do in the past few seasons. The German international is fuelled with an incredible stamina, which allows him to cover the high grounds. Besides that, the lad is known to fit in the high pressing style and loves to charge the players in their own half, and that is something Klopp would definitely love.
Unlike Moreno, the 26-year-old is strong in defending. Besides his defending skills, he loves to keep crossing the ball into the danger area and that creates the chances.
He may not be a David Alaba, but he certainly is an upgrade for Moreno. In a formation where wingers keep tracking inside the box, full-backs have to be on their toes, and the German manager, Joachim Löw, when asked about Hector, he said:
“We have full-backs who are trained in their clubs but defensively. Jonas Hector makes good plays in Cologne but rather in a defensive, basic order, which is a bit geared towards the counterattack.”
With Kohl, the 26-year-old has also been used as a central midfielder, but many believe that the player is meant to play at the left spot, and this is what makes Jonas a perfect player for Klopp.
What they say about him
“Because of his game intelligence, Jonas is a player who has mastered all the positions on which it comes to organisation, playmaking and order” – Koln boss Peter Stoger.
“Jonas Hector’s position with us is left-back. I know he played in midfield for Cologne, but that is not going to happen with us” – Germany boss Jogi Low.
