Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri set to stay put at Liverpool

According to Evening Standard’s David Lynch, Liverpool attacker Xherdan Shaqiri will stay put at the club this summer in spite of speculations surrounding his future.

The 28-year-old Shaqiri has been with the club since 2018, having arrived from Stoke City. The Switzerland international had a productive debut campaign at Anfield, finishing with six goals and five assists from 30 matches in all competitions.

However, the season gone by was a difficult one for Shaqiri as he spent a vast majority out on the sidelines. The 28-year-old just featured 11 times in all competitions, managing a solitary goal. Even when he was fit, manager Jurgen Klopp did not favour using him on a regular basis.

In the current campaign, Shaqiri has featured just one time across all competitions and hasn’t made the matchday squad for even one of our Premier League fixtures so far this term. This had led to speculations that the club might look to offload him before the transfer window closes. (h/t Liverpool Echo)

However, there have been no concrete offers for the Switzerland international until now, even though there has been interest in him, as claimed by Lynch. And as a result, he could end up staying put at the club. However, that could change should a club come in with a late bid for the 28-year-old attacker.

Shaqiri poses a bit of a quandary for Liverpool. While he can be unplayable on his day, the 28-year-old is far too inconsistent, while fitness issues are also a concern.

But, considering that we will be competing on four fronts, holding on to him in order to ensure squad depth, might be the right thing to do.
