Transfer News: FC Porto want Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic

As per a report by The Athletic (Subscription Required), FC Porto are the frontrunners for securing a permanent transfer for Liverpool midfielder, Marko Grujic.

The Serbian midfielder was Klopp’s first signing at the club. However, things never really worked out for him as he was loaned out several times, including Porto last year.

He spent the last season in Portugal after the Reds failed to seal an £18million transfer for him last summer to Werder Bremen. But he now looks set to leave, with the Liga NOS interested in a permanent transfer.

The Reds believe they can get somewhere around £15million for the 25-year-old. That would be a significant profit on the £5.1million Liverpool paid for his signature to Red Star Belgrade in 2016.

Grujic, Wilson and Origi on the chopping block

Speaking in an interview with The Athletic last year, Grujic himself revealed that the competition for a place in the Liverpool starting XI is very challenging.

“The challenge (at Liverpool) is so big. There are a lot of quality midfielders at the club. It’s honestly hard to get a chance.”

Harry Wilson could also be sold by Liverpool.

It is said that Liverpool hope to raise around £60million from sales, with Harry Wilson and Divock Origi also on the chopping block. Wilson’s involvement in the UEFA Euros 2020 means that any decision about his future could come after the tournament.

The Reds are already on the verge of losing an influential midfielder. Georginio Wijnaldum is all set to join Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent this summer.

But despite that, the club’s intention to offload Grujic shows that he is not in Jurgen Klopp’s plans. Fans would, however, hope that Liverpool can get a new midfielder in the summer considering the importance of depth when chasing trophies in four competitions.
