Xherdan Shaqiri coy on Liverpool future amid exit links

Speaking ahead of Switzerland’s UEFA Euro 2020 fixture against Italy (h/t Mirror), Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri has addressed speculations surrounding his future at the club.

Shaqiri signed for Liverpool in the summer of 2018 from Stoke City after the Potters were relegated from the Premier League. While he has never been a regular starter at Anfield, the versatile Switzerland international made valuable contributions in the Reds’ Champions League and Premier League triumphs in his first two years at the club.

The season gone by though, was a difficult one for Shaqiri has he struggled with fitness issues and hardly got a look-in into Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI. Indeed, the 29-year-old ended the 2020/21 term with just 22 appearances, out of which only five were starts in the Premier League. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Shaqiri is now said to be desperate to play regularly and, as a result, is expected to consider his options this summer. When quizzed about what the future holds for him, the £13m signing from Stoke City refused to give anything away.

“At the moment, I don’t really want to talk about it. I have a contract there and after the Euros, of course, I will talk to my agent. We will look at the situation and then we will decide how to proceed.”

Shaqiri, in case he does decide to leave, isn’t likely to be short on suitors. Serie a giants, Lazio, for one are keen on signing the 29-year-old this summer, as per the report.

Shaqiri still has two years left on his contract with Liverpool. But the Reds would be open to an exit, as long it is a straightforward, permanent transfer, with the club not having to subsidise any of his wages.

So, as things stand, it seems like Shaqiri could be plying his trade away from Anfield come summer.
